starting over

May 14, 2016

I was talking to a very wise woman yesterday. We were discussing starting over and wrong turns. I said I’m trying to find freedom but… [READ MORE]

the woman who walks alone

The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before. – Albert Einstein

If we do not suffer a loss all the way to the end, it will wait for us. – Elizabeth Lesser

Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. – Henry James

the only truth

July 9, 2015

Really feeling this beautiful quote today as we drift through another strange, cloudy summer day in July. Made a salad with yuzu vinegar. Shared it with the dragon flies on the back steps while Bruno bunny-hopped through the obscenely tall, well watered grass and clover in the yard. Now I’m lighting a candle by the piano and clearing the whole day for playing. Writing some new stuff while wrapping up the older songs for the album. Feels good to do two things at once from the same place in my heart. To be open and devoted to the process of making music. A real privilege and pleasure. X

independence

July 7, 2015

Had a lovely long weekend celebrating the 4th in Montauk. Took my favorite castaway with me… it’s hard to raise a glass to freedom when you’re in a seriously co-dependent relationship with a four-legged lover boy but we went through the motions. Back to work now on string arrangements for the album! Things are sounding […]

upside down

June 26, 2015

Watch out for intellect, because it knows so much it knows nothing and leaves you hanging upside down, mouthing knowledge as your heart falls out of your mouth. Anne Sexton

the journey

May 30, 2015

The Journey:  One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice– though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. ‘Mend my life!’ each voice cried. But you didn’t stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their […]

fear

May 29, 2015

Tonight I heard a voice say: Let the fear come. Yes. Let it come. But let it pass also. Don’t forget to let it pass.

Tomorrow

May 26, 2015

Today didn’t fit right. Today was hazy gray with hard edges. But who knows, maybe tomorrow will feel bright and possible? I’m reserving despair and going to bed early.

Mordecai

There aren’t enough guilty pleasures in my life. But having popsicles with the kids on a long, lazy weekend and watching Regular Show is definitely one of them…

Mourning Doves

May 22, 2015

I walked as far as the road goes and came upon two mourning doves in the tall grass by the edge of the lake, cooing their secret satisfactions, as the day rose up around them in gentle celebration.

New Life

May 15, 2015

There is very little difference between burying and planting. For often, we need to put dead things to rest, so that new life can grow.  Mark Nepo

The Singer Sings To The Dreamer

May 14, 2015

Found my copy of Morrissey’s magnificent auto biography tonight and re-read one of the quotes I had underlined twice: “The singer sings to the dreamer.” After all these years he still sits firmly in the center of my musical heart.

Close To The Edge

May 13, 2015

I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can’t see from the center. Kurt Vonnegut

Full Bloom

May 12, 2015

Wrapping up work on the site, which began in earnest this winter and is finally feeling real now. I’m watching it come to fruition as the spring goes full bloom. There is birthing and re-birthing in every corner…

Famous

May 11, 2015

I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous, or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular, but because it never forgot what it could do.   Naomi Shihab Nye
